Getafe beat Sevilla to ease relegation fears

A second-half goal from Sergio Escudero helps Getafe climb away from the La Liga relegation zone with a win over Sevilla.

Getafe have beaten Sevilla 1-0 in La Liga to climb away from the relegation zone with just one game still to play this season.

The home side looked strong early on as Sergio Escudero and Angel Lafita both had chances inside the opening 10 minutes, but Escudero's went wide before Javi Varas saved the second effort.

Sevilla started to see more of the ball later in the first half, with Moi trying to drill an effort in from 35 yards out, while Marko Marin was denied by Julio Cesar.

Getafe made a bright start to the second half as Escudero had another chance saved, while Lafita headed onto the bar from a Pedro Leon corner.

The hosts finally managed to break the deadlock in the 70th minute when Escudero fired the ball into the top right corner from outside the box.

Ciprian Marica had a chance to double their lead five minutes later, but headed wide from close range from another Leon corner.

Medhi Lacen had two shots late on as Getafe continued to dominate the match, but the single goal proved enough for home side to clinch the win.

The result moves Getafe up to 15th in the table, three points clear of the relegation zone, while Sevilla remain fifth.
