Leeds United, Derby County play out draw on final day

A second-half goal from Matt Smith earns Leeds United a point in their Championship clash with Derby County on the final day of the season.

Leeds United ended Derby County's run of five straight wins as they played out a 1-1 draw on the final day of the Championship season.

The visitors took the lead in the sixth minute when Jeff Hendrick was played in behind the defence and his shot was saved by Jack Butland, but Simon Dawkins was on hand to turn the ball in.

Connor Sammon came close to doubling Derby's lead when he raided down the left and into the box, but he curled his effort just past the post.

Leeds almost found an equaliser when Scott Wootton powered a header at goal from close range, but Lee Grant was on hand to make the save for the visitors.

Grant again kept the scores level as he scrambled across to palm the ball away when Michael Brown fired an effort at goal from distance.

After the break, Leeds got their equaliser through Matt Smith as he lifted the ball over Grant with a smart finish after good build-up play from Danny Pugh and Ross McCormack.

The home side almost took the lead when McCormack fired a free kick at goal, but Grant was there again to make the stop for the Rams.

Leeds made a late push to find a winner but Grant held firm to deny McCormack again as both sides settled for a point.
