Mallorca relegated despite thrashing Real Valladolid

Mallorca record a 4-2 win over Real Valladolid but still slip out of La Liga after finishing in the bottom three.

Mallorca have been relegated from La Liga despite coming close to escaping the bottom three with a final day victory over Real Valladolid.

The home side showed urgency from the outset and went ahead on 17 minutes through Alejandro Alfaro, who showed composure to rifle home from close range.

Despite pressing, Mallorca were caught cold after 30 minutes as Bueno guided a header into top corner to bring Valladolid level.

Just before the break Mallorca made their dominance count to retake the lead, with Marti applying the finish from inside the penalty area.

Mallorca continued to attack with pace and were rewarded just before the hour mark when Giovanni Dos Santos curled in a clever effort from 20 yards.

Soon after Javi Marquez made the three points safe with a powerful finish, timing his run perfectly to meet a pass from Victor Casadesus.

Valladolid scored a late consolation thanks to a smart strike from Omar, but Mallorca were always in control of an open match.

Ultimately an impressive performance was not enough to save the Islanders as Joaquin Caparros's side slipped out of the top flight.
