Manchester United vs. Bayern Munich: Head-to-head record and past meetings

Ahead of Tuesday's Champions League clash between Man Utd and Bayern, Sports Mole looks at the head-to-head record and previous meetings between the two clubs.

Manchester United will welcome Bayern Munich to Old Trafford on Tuesday evening needing to triumph in order to stand any chance of advancing to the last-16 stage of the Champions League.

The Red Devils are currently bottom of Group A on four points, and they need to overcome Bayern and then hope that the section's other match between Copenhagen and Galatasaray is a draw, in order to book their position in the knockout round of the tournament.

However, a win over Bayern, who are already through as group winners, would ensure that Erik ten Hag's side finish third, which would bring a spot in the Europa League knockout round playoffs.

Both sides will enter the match off the back of surprising league defeats, with Man United losing 3-0 at home to Bournemouth in the Premier League, while Bayern suffered a shock 5-1 defeat at Eintracht Frankfurt in the Bundesliga.

Here, Sports Mole takes an in-depth look at the head-to-head record and previous meetings between the two sides ahead of the huge contest in Manchester.

Head-to-head record

Previous meetings: 12
Man Utd wins: 2
Draws: 5
Bayern wins: 5

Man United and Bayern will meet for the 13th time on Tuesday evening, and it is Bayern that lead the head-to-head record, winning five times to Man United's two, while there have also been five draws.

Their most famous meeting came in the Champions League final in May 1999; Bayern were on course for the trophy when Mario Basler sent the Bundesliga side ahead in the sixth minute of the clash at Camp Nou.

However, Teddy Sheringham levelled the scores in the 91st minute before Ole Gunnar Solskjaer netted the winner for Man United in the 93rd minute, securing a famous treble for the Red Devils, and it will forever be remembered as one of the most dramatic finishes to a football game.

The 20-time English champions have only beaten Bayern once since then, which proved to be a 3-2 success in the second leg of their quarter-final in April 2010, but it was not enough to advance, with the German side progressing on away goals after a 4-4 draw on aggregate.

The first two Champions League meetings between the two sides were draws in the group stage of the 1998-99 campaign, with the scores finishing 2-2 at Allianz Arena and 1-1 at Old Trafford, before the two teams went on to famously meet in the final of the competition.

Man United also lost twice to Bayern in the quarter-finals of the 2000-01 competition, before the pair played out draws in their two games in the group stage of the 2001-02 tournament.

The two sides also locked horns in the quarter-finals in 2013-14, and it proved to be comfortable for Bayern, who drew 1-1 at Old Trafford in the first leg before recording a 3-1 victory in their clash in Germany.

The pair then met for the 12th time at Allianz Arena earlier this season, and it proved to be a dramatic contest, with Thomas Tuchel's side running out 4-3 winners.

Bayern led 2-0, 3-1 and 4-2, with Man United always playing catch-up in the contest, and Casemiro's 95th-minute effort, which made it 4-3, proved to be too little, too late for the Red Devils.

Man United's only success over Bayern, aside from the Champions League final, came at home, and they are certainly the team most in need on Tuesday, with Ten Hag looking to deliver what would be one of his most famous results since arriving as head coach of the English giants.
