Everton registered their third successive home win over Manchester United by thumping the Red Devils 3-0 at Goodison Park this afternoon.

James McCarthy got the show on the road with a cool finish after just five minutes, before John Stones added another before the break to fatten the advantage.

Kevin Mirallas then came off the bench in the second half to seal the points with a cute near-post finish.

Goal

Tim Howard: Good performance despite having very little to do. One moment sticks in the mind when he smothered Rooney's shot early in the second half. (6/10)

Defence

Seamus Coleman: Shackled Young well but struggled at times to do the same to Shaw. He was excellent going forward, however, and played a big role in two of the goals. (6/10)

Phil Jagielka: Fortunate not to get punished after Fellaini dispossessed him after the opening goal, but did not put a foot wrong after that. (6/10)

John Stones: Excellent defensive performance from the youngster, who grabbed his first goal for the club. (7/10)

Leighton Baines: Refused to give Mata an inch and regularly proved to be a menace from dead-ball situations. Also grabbed the assist for Stones's header. (7/10)

Midfield

Gareth Barry: Expertly sat in front of Everton's defence and comfortably combated Fellaini throughout the first half. (7/10)

James McCarthy: Slightly careless possession at times, but opened the scoring on five minutes and, alongside Barry, sat in front of the defence brilliantly. (7/10)

Leon Osman: Regularly looked a little off the pace and deservedly subbed for Mirallas just before the 70-minute mark. (5/10)

Aaron Lennon: The on-loan Spurs winger was good at both end; constantly testing Shaw in attack and helping out Coleman in defence. (6/10)

Ross Barkley: Everton's best player on the day with a tireless, economic performance in behind spearhead Lukaku. (8/10)

Attack

Romelu Lukaku: Threw his weight around but looked a little rusty in his first game back following a brief absence through injury. (6/10)

Substitutes

Kevin Mirallas: Excellent cameo and put the result beyond doubt with a cool finish on 74 minutes. (7/10)

Goal

David de Gea: Looked a shadow of his former self with a nervy, indecisive performance between the sticks. Blameless for the goals, but still did not look himself. (5/10)

Defence

Antonio Valencia: Inexplicably stopped dead to call offside while Mirallas raced in on goal before adding a third and putting the game beyond United - a really juvenile error from a seasoned player. (4/10)

Chris Smalling: Comfortably United's best defender on the day, pulling off a host of last-ditch tackles or blocks to keep the scoreline down. (7/10)

Paddy McNair: One or two hairy moments from the youngster, but definitely should have done more to prevent McCarthy's opener after five minutes. (5/10)

Luke Shaw: Got forward really well but his final ball was lacking, as it was at Stamford Bridge last week. Also booked for cynically tugging back Lennon. (6/10)

Midfield

Daley Blind: Along with McNair, partially to blame for McCarthy's opener after producing a half-hearted tackle right before the Republic of Ireland international scored. (5/10)

Ander Herrera: One of United's better players on the day, economic in possession, but the Spaniard struggled to have an impact in the key areas. (6/10)

Ashley Young: Another ineffective performance from the winger, who struggled to get the better of Coleman all too regularly this afternoon. (4/10)

Marouane Fellaini: Endured a truly rotten return to Goodison. Missed a sitter, was booked, and partially to blame for Everton's second goal before the break. Subbed at half time. (4/10)

Juan Mata: Fizzed a couple of dangerous balls into the box but overall was nowhere near influential enough to help out Rooney, and Falcao when he came on after the break. (5/10)

Attack

Wayne Rooney: Would have loved to mark his return to Goodison with a goal but that was never on the cards. Everton's defence kept him quiet throughout. (5/10)

Substitutes

Radamel Falcao: Lacked the service from the wide areas to really help United again. Held the ball up well but that won't see him earn a permanent move. (5/10)

Angel di Maria: Delivered from decent crosses into the danger zone but few of them reached a red shirt. (5/10)
