New York Red Bulls undone by late Jermaine Jones strike

New York Red Bulls have succumbed to a 2-1 defeat against New England Revolution in their MLS Playoff first-leg clash at the Red Bull Arena on Sunday, courtesy of Jermaine Jones's late goal.

The visitors were quickest out of the starting blocks, with Jones's header in the fourth minute forcing a save from Luis Robles.

Moments later, the hosts came charging back as Bradley Wright-Phillips set up Lloyd Sam, but the subsequent effort was thwarted by Revs goalkeeper Bobby Shuttleworth.

The away side broke the deadlock in the 17th minute when Teal Bunbury cut inside from the right-hand side and curled his shot into the far corner.

The Red Bulls pulled the game back midway through the first half when former Charlton Athletic striker Wright-Phillips made the most of a scramble in the box to nod home from close range.

With the game on a knife-edge, the second half proved tense, with the hosts accruing a multitude of bookings following several rash challenges.

Ultimately, the Revs stole the win in with just four minutes of normal time left when Bunbury squared for Jones to poke home into an empty net.
