10-man Real Betis hold on for goalless draw

Real Betis hold Valencia despite being reduced to ten men at the Mestalla.

Real Betis frustrate Valencia, despite being reduced to 10 men, to earn a 0-0 draw in La Liga at the Mestalla.

Sofiane Feghouli came close early on as he cut inside two defenders before hitting a low half-volley that Antonio Adan tipped past the post.

Feghouli had another chance later in the half when he cut inside from the right again but his effort was not accurate enough to beat Adan in the Betis goal.

Centre-back Heiko Westermann had the best opportunity for Real Betis late in the first half but his shot was well blocked by the Valencia defence.

Betis midfielder Dani Ceballos was sent off just after half time for a second bookable defence, with the 19-year-old cynically fouling in the middle of the pitch to prevent a counter-attack.

Valencia pushed for a goal against the 10 men, with Feghouli swinging over the ball across the six-yard box but none of the Los Che forwards could convert the chance.

Rodrigo saw his effort blocked in the final 15 minutes and Aymen Abdennour had his header saved by Adan in the last few seconds but Betis held on for a point

The draw keeps Betis in ninth while Valencia leapfrog Deporivo La Coruna into seventh.
