The hosts came out of the blocks fighting with David Ducourtioux seeing an effort well saved by Cedric Carrasso, before they were handed an even better chance when Majeed Waris was brought down in the box by Lamine Sane.

However, Maor Melikson had his nervous spot kick pushed around the post with a fine stop from Carrasso before the resulting corner was cleared.

It was an end-to-end contest for the rest of the half, with Cheick Diabate for Bordeaux and Gregory Pujol for the hosts both firing wide when well placed.

As Valenciennes pushed forward for the goal that they had to score, Bordeaux went ahead on the break on 71 minutes. The move was finished off by Julien Faubert, who slotted in low from the corner of the six-yard box.

Valenciennes were unable to create enough for the remainder of the game as they were consigned to a defeat that relegates them to Ligue 2.
