Villarreal, Eibar share the spoils

Villarreal leave it late to secure a 1-1 draw against Eibar in Sunday's La Liga clash at the Estadio El Madrigal and remain in the hunt for a European place.

Villarreal have left it late to secure a 1-1 draw against Eibar in Sunday's La Liga clash at the Estadio El Madrigal.

The start to the game saw both sides quick out of the starting blocks, as Cedric Bakambu weighed in with two chances in the first 10 minutes before Borja Baston was thwarted at the last by Alphonse Areola moments later.

Just before the half-hour mark Baston passed the ball to the feet of Sergio Enrich, who was left with a simple tap-in to put Eibar a goal up.

The visitors were then given the chance to double their lead from the spot after Jaume Costa held an opponent back in the box, but Dani Garcia's penalty was expertly saved by Areola.

Eibar would come to rue the missed opportunity because, just four minutes before the end, Costa collected Denis Suarez's ball and slotted home via a deflection off the post.

The result sees Marcelino Garcia Toral's side remain fifth in the La Liga table, a point and a place above the Basque side.
