The hosts were on the attack early on when Enner Valencia stretched to reach a cross from Aaron Cresswell, but the Ecuador international could not turn it in.
Burnley's chances were dealt a blow just over 20 minutes in when Cheikhou Kouyate was brought down by Michael Duff in the penalty area, resulting in a red card for the defender.
The hosts were also awarded a spot kick as a result of the foul, leaving Mark Noble to slot the ball into the bottom corner from 12 yards out.
Sam Allardyce's side could have made it two when Stewart Downing set up Valencia, but the striker's finish was tipped over by Tom Heaton to keep the deficit to one at the break.
