Mare Dibaba wins women's marathon at World Athletics Championships

Mare Dibaba becomes the first Ethiopian to win a gold medal in the women's marathon at the World Athletics Championships, beating Kenyan Helah Kiprop in a sprint finish.

Mare Dibaba has won the women's marathon at the World Athletics Championships in Beijing this morning.

Dibaba completed the race in a time of 2:27:35, becoming the first Ethiopian to win a gold medal in the event at the World Athletics Championships.

Kenya's Helah Kiprop came second in 2:27:36, with Dibaba fending off her rival in a sprint finish, while Eunice Kirwa of Bahrain claimed the bronze medal with a time of 2:27:39.

Japan's Risa Shigetomo and North Korea's Kim Hye Song had led for most of the race, but the pair fell away before the two-hour mark.

London Marathon winner Tigist Tufa finished in sixth place.
