National selector James Whittaker expects "world-class" player Gary Ballance to give England a "fantastic option" at next year's World Cup.
The Yorkshireman was recalled to the England one-day side when the 15-man squad for the tournament in Australia and New Zealand was named on Saturday.
Ballance, who has established himself at number three in the Test team, was dropped for the 5-2 series defeat in Sri Lanka, but Whittaker has insisted that he has always been part of England's plans.
He told Sky Sports News: "Gary Ballance has been identified as a world-class player for the future in all forms of the game.
"He's been earmarked as a squad player and possible first-team player for a number of months and we believe he's a fantastic option for the coaches."
The 25-year-old averages only 26.10 in 12 ODIs, but has made three hundreds in 13 Test innings.
He, Alex Hales and Ian Bell will likely fight for the top-order spot created by Alastair Cook's removal as captain.
