Joanna Rowsell: "It feels absolutely brilliant"

Team England's Joanna Rowsell is delighted at having won the gold medal in the 3,000m individual pursuit at the Commonwealth Games today.

Team England cyclist Joanna Rowsell has expressed her delight at having won the gold medal in the 3,000m individual pursuit this evening.

The 25-year-old added the Commonwealth Games title to an already glittering list of honours that includes an Olympic gold and five World Championship crowns.

The individual pursuit has been removed from the Olympics, meaning that the Commonwealths are the pinnacle of the format, and Rowsell expressed her pride at having scooped the top prize.

"It feels absolutely brilliant. The individual pursuit is one of my favourite events. My main event is team pursuit, which I'm Olympic champion in," she told reporters.

"I won the World Championships [in individual pursuit] earlier this year and after that it was just team pursuit training, so it was really nice to come here and do the individual pursuit because there was specific work for it. I'm proud it has all paid off so I'm really glad to get the title.

"It only comes around every four years, the Commonwealth Games, so for me these are like the Olympics for this event because it isn't in the Olympics anymore. I'm really pleased."

Rowsell edged out Australia's Annette Edmondson in the final with a time of 3:31.615.
