Team GB's Chris Mears has edged into the men's 3m springboard semi-final by a margin of less than three points.

The 19-year-old took the last of the qualification spots at the expense of Malaysia's Qiang Huang and Italy's Michele Benedetti with a steady performance.

There were several howlers this evening, and fellow Briton Jack Laugher fell victim to one of them. His knees buckled on takeoff during his final dive, sending him crashing into the water for a score of zero.

Stephan Feck of Germany lost his footing during his second dive, and he hit the pool like a stone. The 22-year-old sustained an injury in the process, forcing him to pull out after round three.

He Chong was the favourite for the top spot ahead of the contest, but Russia's Ilya Zakharov beat him to it with an impressive score of 507.65, just under seven points ahead of the Chinese competitor in second.

His compatriot Qin Kai came in a surprise 11th place after faltering on his fifth dive thanks to a poor launch.
