Jack Laugher: 'Fourth for Chris Mears at Commonwealth Games is amazing'

Gold-winning diver Jack Laugher tells Sports Mole that "best mate" Chris Mears is "amazing" after he came fourth in the same Commonwealth Games 1m springboard final.

Teenage gold medallist Jack Laugher has described England teammate Chris Mears as "amazing" after the pair both finished in the top four of the Commonwealth Games 1m springboard final.

Laugher was the clear winner with a personal best score of 449.90 - more than 45 points more than anyone else - while Mears agonisingly missed out on a medal after a finale that went right down to the wire.

Laugher and Mears, who live and train together in Leeds, looked like they both might be on the podium after Mears's final dive, but Australia's Matthew Mitcham produced what Mears called an "absolutely sensational dive" to grab second place.

"Chris did absolutely amazing," Laugher told Sports Mole seconds after finding out that his housemate had missed out.

"He's been injured after rolling both of his ankles back in November and he was out for three months. To come back from that and come fourth here is just amazing.

"I'm really proud of him, he's my best mate and I'll be sure to give him a massive hug later."

Laugher and Mears are expected to win gold in the synchronised 3m springboard, which takes place on Friday lunchtime at the Royal Commonwealth Pool in Edinburgh.
