English diver Chris Mears has described teammate Jack Laugher as "on fire" after his performance in the Commonwealth Games men's 1m springboard final this evening.
Both Mears and Laugher, who are "best friends" and live together, competed in the final and it was 19-year-old Laugher who stole the show with a new personal-best score of 449.90 for his six dives.
Mears, 21, thought that he had earned a medal himself after diving well in the final round, but he was edged off the podium by Australian duo Matthew Mitcham and Grant Nel.
Praising Laugher, whom he competes alongside in the synchronised 3m springboard, Mears told Sports Mole: "He absolutely smashed it like he always does. He's absolutely on fire at the moment. I'm honoured to be his synchro partner and his best friend.
"He fully deserves that gold. We've been both training so hard. I've had a [tough] pre-season, but maybe with a [good] pre-season who knows I might have been on the podium."
The pair's synchro final takes place at lunchtime on Friday at the Royal Commonwealth Pool in Edinburgh.
