Sony has "a plan" to introduce Spider-Man into the SPUMC

Sony has
The head of Sony appears to suggest that Spider-Man will be appearing in its burgeoning franchise of spinoff movies in the near future.

Sony Pictures president Sanford Panitch has revealed that Spider-Man will cross over into the studio's burgeoning superhero franchise in the future.

The iconic character - currently played by Tom Holland - is an integral part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and is due to headline the upcoming Spider-Man: Far From Home, which is rumoured to be a multiverse movie featuring previous web-slingers Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield.

Away from the MCU, Sony is working on developing the Sony Pictures Universe of Marvel Characters (SPUMC) featuring other characters from the Spider-Man comics - and in 2018 the first film of the franchise, Venom, was released.

A sequel, Venom: Let There Be Carnage, is due out later this year and will be followed in 2022 by Morbius and in 2023 by Kraven The Hunter, which this week cast Aaron Taylor-Johnson as its lead.

Speaking to Variety, Sony chief Panitch appeared to suggest that it is a case of when, not if, Spider-Man will show up in the SPUMC movies and hinted that the events of No Way Home will open the door to the move.

"There actually is a plan," he said. "I think now maybe it's getting a little more clear for people where we're headed and I think when No Way Home comes out, even more will be revealed."

He continued: "There's an incredible sandbox there to play with. We want those MCU movies to be absolutely huge, because that's great for us and our Marvel characters, and I think that's the same thing on their side.

"But we have a great relationship. There's lots of opportunities, I think, that are going to happen."

Spider-Man: No Way Home is due for release on December 17.
