Cheick Diabate's goal just before the half-hour mark gives Bordeaux 1-0 lead against Newcastle United at home.

Bordeaux have have taken a 1-0 lead against Newcastle United in their Europa League Group D clash at home.

The hosts could have made the breakthrough as early as the third minute when Cheick Diabate shot on goal from eight yards, but Robert Elliot made a good save.

The French side continued to control proceedings at Stade Jacques Chaban-Delmas and went close in the 20th minute.

First Henri Saivet shot low across the Newcastle goal and brought out a good save from Elliot, who then denied David Bellion when the Bordeaux forward tried to tuck in the rebound.

Bordeaux eventually pulled ahead in the 29th minute when Bellion slipped a pass to Fahid Benkhalfallah, whose cross was nodded home by Diabate from close range.
