Preview: Huddersfield Town vs. Luton Town - prediction, team news, lineups

Sports Mole previews Sunday's Championship clash between Huddersfield Town and Luton Town, including predictions, team news and possible lineups.

Huddersfield Town play host to Luton Town on New Year's Day with the possibility of recording three successive wins for the first time this season.

While two victories in a row have moved the Terriers into 22nd spot in the Championship standings, achieving the same feat has left Luton in seventh position.

On five occasions this season, Huddersfield have endured at least two successive defeats, such form resulting in the club spending the majority of the campaign in the bottom three.

However, victories over Preston North End and Rotherham United have moved the Terriers into 22nd spot, now just three points adrift of 18th-placed Bristol City.

Although Mark Fotheringham will not be getting carried away, this is the first time this campaign where Huddersfield look like they have the quality and character to avoid what would still be regarded as a surprise relegation.

The Yorkshire outfit have not necessarily been reliant on their home form, but they have now collected 17 points from 13 games at the John Smith's Stadium.

Huddersfield have also now gone 13 games without conceding more than twice in a fixture, yet that will be put to the test by a Luton side who are seemingly getting warmed up under Rob Edwards.

This time last week, the club's supporters were lukewarm to the appointment of a former Watford boss, but statement wins over Norwich City and Queens Park Rangers have lifted the mood at Kenilworth Road.

Despite potentially being content with avoiding defeat at a resurgent QPR side also under new management, the Hatters stormed to a 3-0 victory in West London.

Carlton Morris ended a six-game streak without a goal by registering a double and an assist, taking him to a combined total of 15 strikes and assists this season.

At the other end, Luton also ended a four-game wait for another shutout, and they now find themselves three points adrift of third-placed Blackburn Rovers with a game in hand.

Team News

Barring any fitness issues, Fotheringham will likely want to select the same Huddersfield XI which started against Rotherham.

Although the likes of Sorba Thomas, Etienne Camara and Tyreece Simpson were all introduced as substitutes, they will remain among the replacements unless Fotheringham wishes to introduce fresh legs.

Edwards may take the same approach when naming his Luton side, although he is boosted by the return of Gabriel Osho after a one-game ban.

If Osho is recalled, James Bree will return to right wing-back, with either Alfie Doughty or Amari'i Bell featuring on the left.

Cauley Woodrow may also earn a start in attack in place of Harry Cornick.

Huddersfield Town possible starting lineup:
Nicholls; Lees, Helik, Doyle; Hayden, Hogg, Kasumu, Ruffels; Rudoni, Holmes; Rhodes

Luton Town possible starting lineup:
Horvath; Bree, Lockyer, Potts; Doughty, Campbell, Clark, Mpanzu, Bell; Morris, Cornick

We say: Huddersfield Town 1-1 Luton Town

Despite the difference in league positions, this has all the makings of being a competitive fixture, helped by Huddersfield finding their feet under Fotheringham. However, Luton look like they could become a strong outfit under Edwards, leading us to predict a share of the spoils.
