Liverpool team news: Injury, suspension list vs. Aston Villa

Sports Mole rounds up all of Liverpool's latest injury and suspension news ahead of Friday's FA Cup third-round clash with Aston Villa.

Liverpool begin their quest for FA Cup glory on Friday when they travel to fellow Premier League high-flyers Aston Villa for the third round.

Jurgen Klopp's men go into the game following a dismal night in Southampton, where Danny Ings's early strike against his former club condemned the Premier League champions to a 1-0 defeat on the South Coast.

The Reds will not have fond memories of their most recent trip to Villa Park either, as Dean Smith's men put seven past them in one of the results of the season back in October.

Here, Sports Mole rounds up all of Liverpool's latest injury and suspension news ahead of the third-round match.

Joel Matip

Status: Out
Type of injury: Adductor
Possible return date: January 21 (vs. Burnley)

Joel Matip sustained an adductor injury in Liverpool's draw with West Bromwich Albion at Anfield on December 27, and the centre-back will remain sidelined for at least another two weeks.

Naby Keita

Status: Out
Type of injury: Muscle
Possible return date: Unknown

The injury-plagued Naby Keita suffered a muscular problem prior to the West Brom stalemate and was nowhere to be seen on Monday evening. The midfielder will not recover in time for the trip to Villa Park either.

Diogo Jota

Status: Out
Type of injury: Knee
Possible return date: February 6 (vs. Manchester City)

Diogo Jota - who had enjoyed a brilliant start to life at Anfield - picked up a knee injury against FC Midtyjlland in the Champions League and will remain on the treatment table for at least another month.

Kostas Tsimikas

Status: Out
Type of injury: Knee
Possible return date: February 6 (vs. Manchester City)

Kostas Tsimikas was the second knee-related casualty of that Champions League tie with Midtjylland, and as is the case with Jota, the left-back is not expected back until February.

Joe Gomez

Status: Out
Type of injury: Knee
Possible return date: Unknown

Joe Gomez is the first of Liverpool's two long-term defensive absentees with the knee injury he sustained while on international duty with England, and it remains to be seen if the centre-back will take to the pitch again this season.

Virgil van Dijk

Status: Out
Type of injury: Knee
Possible return date: Unknown

Virgil van Dijk has stepped up his recovery from the ACL injury he suffered in October's Merseyside derby, but a return to action in the current campaign remains unlikely.

LIVERPOOL'S SUSPENSION LIST

Liverpool have no players suspended for their FA Cup clash with Villa.
