West Bromwich Albion have released a statement claiming that striker Nicolas Anelka is excused on "compassionate grounds" from this weekend's clash against Everton.
Reports have emerged claiming that the Frenchman told club staff that he is retiring from the game after signing for the Baggies just two months ago.
The statement on the club's official website read: "West Bromwich Albion can confirm that Nicolas Anelka will not be involved in Saturday's game at Everton. The club have excused the striker from club duty on compassionate grounds."
Anelka signed a one-year deal at The Hawthorns, with an option of a further year.
