Colin Oates has paid tribute to Scotland's James Millar after beating him on the way to claiming Commonwealth gold in the -66kg judo category.
The English judoka triumphed thanks to a win over Andreas Krassas, but he was keen to praise Millar, who settled for bronze after failing to edge past Oates in the semi-finals.
"I would have liked for that fight to have been in the final, and am really pleased he took a bronze medal, because he has worked so hard for so many years and missed out for a lot of events, then got a late call-up for this," Oates told reporters.
"But I had one goal - it was a gold medal, that is what I came here to deliver."
Oates was the second Englishman to claim judo gold on Thursday following Ashley McKenzie's success earlier in the evening.
