Andy Murray 'surprised' by Novak Djokovic's first-round exit at Rio Olympics

Andy Murray admits that he is 'surprised' to learn of Novak Djokovic's first-round exit in the men's singles at the Rio Olympics.

Andy Murray has expressed shock at Novak Djokovic's first-round exit in the men's singles at the Rio Olympics.

The world number one - representing Serbia - was sent packing by Argentina's Juan Martin del Potro in straight sets last night.

Murray now becomes the favourite to win gold in the men's singles, but he too experienced disappointment yesterday when he and brother Jamie Murray were knocked out of the doubles by Brazil's Andre Sa and Thomas Bellucci.

"You don't get this opportunity very often because the Olympic Games only come around once every four years," Murray told reporters. "The way the match went - it was a tough one to lose but it just wasn't meant to be.

"We saved a lot of match points but we just didn't take our chances. To lose the match on a net cord really sums it up. I have to concentrate on the singles now so that is my focus.

"I have just heard that Novak Djokovic has gone out of the singles. I didn't see the match but that is obviously a surprise. I don't think it changes too much for me as I have to just keep my focus and concentrate on one match at a time."

Murray, who defeated Viktor Troicki in his singles opener, will take on Juan Monaco in the second round.
