Cleveland Browns general manager Ray Farmer has insisted that quarterback Brian Hoyer is in charge of his own fate in terms of whether or not he wants to come back next season.
Hoyer lost his role as starting quarterback to Johnny Manziel in week 15 and he is set to become a free agent at the end of the season.
However, Farmer concedes that if Hoyer believes he can beat out Manziel to the starting spot then he can decide to extend his stay with the Browns.
"If he wants to be back, that leverage is definitely in his court to make that happen," Farmer told The Plain Dealer.
"Assuming that we could agree to that deal, then that opportunity's available. If we can't come to that agreement, then he obviously would not be back. There's a lot of work to be done in that regard."
However, coach Mike Pettine sounded a little less optimistic about the prospect of Hoyer coming back next year, while the player himself has insisted that he doesn't want to be a back-up to Manziel.
