The Denver Broncos have confirmed that defensive coordinator Jack Del Rio will be the interim head coach.
Del Rio replaces John Fox, who is poised to miss several weeks after collapsing while playing golf last week and will now require an aortic valve replacement surgery.
The 50-year-old will continue in his coordinator duties as well until Fox is healthy enough to return to the team, which may be just before the end of the season.
Denver are 7-1 in their campaign and face the San Diego Chargers in week nine.
