International Olympic Committee denies claims Tokyo 2020 logo infringes copyright

The International Olympic Committee defends the Tokyo 2020 Games after their official logo was accused of trademark infringement by a Belgian designer.

The International Olympic Committee has denied claims that the official emblem for the Tokyo 2020 Games infringes the copyright of a Belgian theatre's logo.

Belgian designer Olivier Debie says that the design is similar to one he created for the Theatre De Liege, although it has not been registered as a trademark.

IOC vice-president John Coates told a meeting of the Olympic management: "The IOC and Tokyo have checked all the copyright registers prior to this launch and that logo in Belgium isn't protected.

"We have looked at this design and we don't think we have a problem."

The Tokyo 2020 logo, unveiled last week by designer Kenjiro Sano, is based on the letter T.
