Adam Gemili withdraws from World Athletics Championships

A hamstring problem forces British sprinter Adam Gemili to pull out of the upcoming World Athletics Championships.

British Athletics have confirmed that Adam Gemili has pulled out of this month's World Athletics Championships in Beijing.

The European 200m champion was recently named in the 63-strong squad for the event, despite the fact that he had still not fully recovered from the hamstring injury that he suffered during the Birmingham Diamond League meeting in June.

However, on medical advice, the 21-year-old has now been withdrawn.

"While Adam has suffered no adverse effects from training following his previous injury, competing is too big a risk based on the latest medical feedback," performance director Neil Black told British Athletics.

"He has made amazing progress and it is a reflection on him that he so wanted to fulfill his commitment to the relay programme. However, we have to make difficult calls occasionally and this is the best for him with the Rio Olympics and the London 2017 World Championships on the horizon."

Meanwhile, the sprinter added: "I'm disappointed that I can't be part of the team, but I do understand the decision. As the performance director Neil has to make those sort of calls and I respect that he has done so, even though he knew I wanted to carry on."

The Championships get underway on Saturday, August 22.
