Charlotte Hornets forward Jeff Taylor has been suspended for 24 games without pay after he pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor domestic violence assault and malicious destruction of hotel property last month.
Taylor will get credit for the 11 games that he has already missed and so he will sit out an additional 13 games which totals to slightly more than a quarter of the league's 82-game schedule.
"This suspension is necessary to protect the interests of the NBA and the public's confidence in it," NBA commissioner Adam Silver said in a statement.
"Mr Taylor's conduct violates applicable law and, in my opinion, does not conform to standards of morality and is prejudicial and detrimental to the NBA."
According to an NBA investigation, Taylor was involved in an altercation with a woman after drinking heavily and an argument escalated, with the Hornets star shoving the woman in a violent manner which resulted in her falling to the ground and hitting her head on a door.
He was also sentenced to 18 months probation during which he must complete 26 weeks in a domestic violence intervention program.
