Amir Khan: "Headguards should come back"

Former Olympic medallist and world champion Amir Khan calls for protective headguards to be reinstated at the Commonwealth Games after they were discarded for Glasgow.

Former Olympic medallist Amir Khan has called for headguards to be reinstated at the Commonwealth Games.

Officials made the decision to discard the piece of protective equipment for the boxing bouts in Glasgow.

Khan wore a headguard during an amateur career which saw him win lightweight silver at Athens 2004, and he believes that they perform an important safety job and make for a fairer competition.

"There have been a lot of cuts," Khan told reporters in Glasgow on Friday. "I'd probably say headguards should come back, especially when you got fighters fighting maybe five times a week.

"On the first day you might get in a head clash and be the favourite to win the tournament."

Khan has a professional boxing record of 29 wins from 32 fights, which have included 19 knockouts.
