Gennady Golovkin has successfully defended his WBA middleweight title with a sixth-round stoppage of Willie Monroe Jr.
The 33-year-old was a huge favourite heading into the contest in California, and he soon set about making a statement against Monroe Jr by dropping the challenger twice during the second round.
Monroe barely made it to the bell, but survived and had some success of his own during the fourth as he suggested that he was not prepared to give in to the hard-punching Kazakh.
However, after Golovkin regained control in the fifth, he dropped the American again in the sixth and his opponent soon indicated that he was finished for the night.
The win for Golovkin was his 20th successive knockout and he now hopes to secure a unification clash with another title holder at 160lbs, or a superfight with Floyd Mayweather Jr at light-middleweight in September.
