Russia's Sergey Vodopiyanov has triumphed 12-5 over Alberto Ezequiel Melian of Argentina in the first round of the Olympic bantamweight class.
The opening round was a cagey affair, with both fighters adopting a cautious approach.
The judges had Vodipiyanov up 2-1 at the end of the first, and the Russian stretched that lead to 5-3 by the end of the second.
Vodipiyanov's quality started to tell in the third round, as a couple of heavy body shots hurt the Argentine.
Melian was given a standing eight count in the third and was in danger of being stopped as Vodipiyanov hunted him around the ring.
The Russian won the last round 7-2 to secure safe passage through to the next round.
