The hosts started the day needing four wickets to clinch victory with England 247-6 and made the perfect start when Stuart Broad (29) tried for a boundary off the bowling of Peter Siddle, but found Nathan Lyon in the deep.

Graeme Swann joined Matt Prior (69) at the crease and survived the over, but England's chief tormentor Mitchell Johnson was then given the second over of the day.

Prior provided some respite when he found the rope with a punch through the off-side.

Swann then got off the mark with a push through the covers for two and Prior reached his half-century off 88 balls with four through mid-wicket.

Australia turned to Ryan Harris and he immediately found joy, enticing Swann to dab one straight to second slip for an easy catch for Michael Clarke.

James Anderson came to the crease and hit a single off Harris, before Prior hit another four to reach 67.

However, his resistance was broken minutes later when he took on a short ball off the bowling of Siddle and fired it into the hands of Harris.

Anderson got four runs through fine-leg, but England were all out for 312 when Monty Panesar (0) hit a drive to Chris Rogers at short cover to hand Harris another wicket and secure victory for Australia.
