Australia wrap up 10-wicket victory in first Ashes Test

Australia make short work of England on the final day of the first Ashes Test to wrap up a 10-wicket victory and take the lead in the series.

Australia have wrapped up a convincing 10-wicket victory over England in the first Test of the 2017-18 Ashes series.

The hosts went into the final day at The Gabba in Brisbane knowing that they needed only 56 runs to secure victory having resumed on 114 without loss in their second innings.

Cameron Bancroft and David Warner had moved the Baggy Greens to the brink of an opening win on day four, and the duo picked up where they left off to see Australia over the line.

Bancroft struck the winning runs on his Test debut by lofting a Chris Woakes delivery straight down the ground for four, leaving him on 82 not out following a disappointing first innings which saw him score just five runs.

Warner also redeemed himself for an unspectacular first innings by finishing on an unbeaten 87, leaving Australia on 173-0 and clinching a 10-wicket win to put the hosts 1-0 up in the series.

The second Test will begin on Saturday at the Adelaide Oval.
