Chennai Super Kings fall nine runs short of Mumbai Indians' total despite a late surge from MS Dhoni.

Mumbai Indians have beaten Chennai Super Kings by nine runs in the Indian Premier League.

The Mumbai Indians won the toss and captain Ricky Ponting decided to bat first.

The skipper, opening the batting, did not last long and only managed six runs before he was caught by Ravichandran Ashwin.

Sachin Tendulkar went for a golden duck, but Dinesh Karthik's 37 steadied the ship before Kieron Pollard (57*) helped the total to a more respectable 148-6 off their 20 overs.

In response the Super Kings were sluggish, with Murali Vijay bowled by Munaf Patel in the second over for just five runs.

Michael Hussey put up some resistance but he was dismissed by Harbhajan Singh for 20.

Chennai's work was cut out with them needing 40 from the final three overs, with MS Dhoni their last real hope.

He took to fight to the Mumbai attack and looked set to rattle off the required runs but he was caught by Munaf Patel off Pollard's bowling at the start of the final over, and as such his side finished short on 139-9.
