England's Emma Pooley: 'Silver medal in women's road race was unexpected'

Emma Pooley admits that she did not expect to win a medal in today's women's road race at the Commonwealth Games, but says that it was "nice to finish on a high".

Team England cyclist Emma Pooley has said that it was "nice to finish on a high" following her silver-medal success in the women's road race at the Commonwealth Games.

The 31-year-old, who announced last week that today's race would be her last before focusing on triathlons and marathons, finished second in Glasgow behind teammate Lizzie Armitstead.

"That was unexpected. We were working for Liz and I wanted to do everything for her," Pooley is quoted as saying by BBC Sport.

"When she came past me and I was still clear [of the chasers], I thought I might as well keep going. It's been a long nine years, and it was nice to finish on a high."

Armitstead became the first English female to win a gold medal in the event.
