La Liga confirm that Arsenal have triggered the £45.4m release clause of Atletico Madrid midfielder Thomas Partey.

La Liga have confirmed that Arsenal have triggered the release clause of Atletico Madrid midfielder Thomas Partey.

The Gunners have been linked with the 27-year-old throughout the summer transfer window, but Atletico's refusal to accept anything below his release clause looked set to scupper the deal.

However, Arsenal have now made a late U-turn for Thomas, with La Liga confirming that they have activated his €50m (£45.4m) buyout clause.

The Ghanaian will now undergo the first part of his medical in Spain before travelling to Arsenal's Colney training base to complete the transfer tonight.

Providing there are no hiccups in that process, official confirmation of the deal is expected prior to tonight's 11pm deadline.

Arsenal let Matteo Guendouzi leave the club on loan for Hertha Berlin earlier this afternoon, paving the way for Thomas to arrive.
