Arsenal chief executive Ivan Gazidis says that the club has the capital to purchase a player of Wayne Rooney's stature.

Arsenal chief executive Ivan Gazidis has given manager Arsene Wenger the go-ahead to table a bid for Wayne Rooney.

The South African businessman is adamant that the Gunners can afford the Manchester United striker's wages of £200,000 a week and meet his £25m price tag, The Sun reports.

"I don't know what his fee would be," Gazidis said of Rooney's asking price.

"I'm talking about an extra £70m of additional, high-margin revenue - so of course we could do that. We could do more than that."

Rooney is said to be holding face-to-face talks with Manchester United manager David Moyes next week to discuss his future at Old Trafford.
