Barcelona coach Pep Guardiola has insisted that Lionel Messi will not be affected by his recent penalty miss against Valencia.

The Argentine saw his spot kick saved as Barca drew the first leg of their Copa del Rey semi-final 1-1 at the Mestalla.

Despite the miss, Guardiola has reassured fans that the forward is still the best player in the team.

"Leo is always fine, he is very competitive," he said. "He has experienced many things and he always plays well, you already know my opinion.

"Without being at his best, he is superior to the other players. He sometimes takes responsibilities without having to.

"What happens is that he spoils us. We are all here to help him, while knowing he needs little help. We all are more comfortable when Messi is on the pitch."

Barcelona, who are currently seven points behind La Liga leaders Real Madrid, face Real Sociedad on Saturday night.
