Borussia Dortmund have revealed on their website on Friday that centre-back Neven Subotic could avoid the need for a second bout of surgery.
Subotic, who has not played since tearing his posterior cruciate knee ligament earlier in the season, will undergo further tests next week as he continues his rehabilitation.
"Borussia Dortmund centre-back Neven Subotic had his knee examined by Professor Strobel in Straubing, Bavaria, on Thursday afternoon, and the scan revealed good news," a club statement read.
"There is reasonable hope that Subotic, who suffered a torn posterior cruciate ligament in his knee in the Bundesliga match at VfL Wolfsburg earlier this season, will not need further surgery."
Dortmund were disappointing in the first half of the Bundesliga season and currently sit fourth after 17 games.
