Brazil right-back Dani Alves given World Cup injury boost

Paris Saint-Germain and Brazil right-back Dani Alves could return to fitness before the end of the month after undergoing surgery on his knee.

Paris Saint-Germain defender Dani Alves has undergone surgery on his knee but is expected to be fit in time to feature for Brazil at this summer's World Cup.

The 35-year-old was injured in PSG's 2-0 Coupe de France final win over Les Herbiers and the decision was taken to almost immediately go under the knife.

Any fears that Alves would miss out on Russia 2018 have been allayed, however, as the right-back could be back before the end of the month, with Brazil's next friendly against Croatia coming on June 3.

A statement from Alves's spokesman to ESPN read: "Following Daniel Alves's right knee injury, which occurred yesterday during the French Cup final, the tests performed today showed a high detachment of the anterior cruciate ligament with posterolateral sprain.

"His condition requires a minimum of three weeks of care before reevaluation."

Brazil also face Austria in a friendly before setting off for Russia, where they will take on Switzerland, Costa Rica and Serbia in the group stage.
