Brentford confirm the departure of defender Mads Roerslev, who joins Bundesliga side Wolfsburg on loan for the remainder of the season.

Brentford have confirmed that full-back Mads Roerslev has joined Wolfsburg on loan until the end of the season.

Earlier this month, Roerslev was linked with a switch to the Bundesliga club despite getting a run of games in the absence of Kristoffer Ajer and Aaron Hickey.

While Roerslev was said to be open to the move, Brentford were unlikely to sanction his departure without signing a replacement first.

However, the Bees confirmed on Friday that they had signed Fiorentina right-back Michael Kayode on a loan deal with an option for a permanent transfer, paving the way for Roerslev to head to the Bundesliga.

Roerslev leaves Brentford for Wolfsburg

Brentford have now announced that the Dane has officially signed for Wolfsburg on loan until the end of the season.

Wolfsburg have the option to covert the move into a permanent deal, meaning that Roerslev might have made his final Brentford appearance in Sunday's 2-1 victory over Crystal Palace.

Commenting on the move, Brentford director of football Phil Giles told the club's official website: "Mads has done an absolutely fantastic job for us since he joined our B team. He is the perfect example of why we set up the B team in 2016 - we wanted to bring in talented young players who needed some development and a pathway to first-team football.

"When he's had his chance, he has always made a positive impact on the team and contributed with some important goals and assists.

"Mads now has the chance to become a first-choice right-back at a very good club and hopefully cement his position in the Denmark national team. Wolfsburg will have the option to buy Mads in the summer, so we aren't sure at this stage whether he will be back with us again for next season.

"But if the match against Crystal Palace was his final Brentford appearance, then he couldn't have wished for a better result and performance."

Roerslev "happy" to join Wolfsburg

Roerslev has featured in 23 competitive matches this season, taking his overall appearance tally to 146 games since he joined the Bees from FC Copenhagen in the summer of 2021.

Upon his arrival at Wolfsburg, the Denmark international expressed his delight about completing a move to a "very good club".

"I am very happy to be here," Roerslev told the German club's official website. "Wolfsburg is a very good club, I like the way the team plays football. I am happy to be a part of it now and I can hardly wait to play in this beautiful stadium."

The full-back joins a Wolfsburg side that are sitting in eight place in the Bundesliga table with 28 points from 19 top-flight matches.

Roerslev could make his debut for Ralph Hasenhuttl's side in Sunday's Bundesliga away clash against Eintracht Frankfurt.
