Cahill: 'I've exceeded expectations at Blues'

Chelsea defender Gary Cahill says that he has exceeded expectations at Stamford Bridge, suggesting that he was aware that he was once regarded as "a squad player".

Chelsea defender Gary Cahill has said that he remains hungry for success at Stamford Bridge, despite suggesting that he has already exceeded expectations.

Cahill is nearing six-and-a-half seasons with the Blues, with 289 appearances being made in all competitions during his time with the West Londoners.

However, Cahill has acknowledged that he was once regarded as "a squad player" and feels that he deserves credit for establishing himself as a key part of a club which has largely been successful since the England international's arrival from Bolton Wanderers.

The 32-year-old told the Daily Mail: "To come for £7m, bought to be a squad player, to go on and win two Premier Leagues and team of the year three out of the last four, and then get the armband, for that money. Does that happen?

"People go for £30m, £40m, £50m at this moment in time and don't make the level at the club they are at, leave after a season and nothing is spoken about. When you break that down, whether you like me or not, you can't say that's not massive success and I'm still hungry to have more."

Cahill has found himself in and out of the Chelsea starting lineup this season but has featured on 34 occasions in all competitions.
