Preview: Hull City vs. Burnley - prediction, team news, lineups

Sports Mole previews Wednesday's Championship clash between Hull City and Burnley, including predictions, team news and possible lineups.

Burnley will be looking to extend their unbeaten run in the Championship when they travel to the MKM Stadium to face Hull City in the Championship on Wednesday night.

The Clarets have been this season's standout performers and look destined for promotion in May, while the Tigers will be happy with progress they have made since the start of the campaign.

Hull earned a respectable point at Coventry City on Saturday afternoon, with Colombian Oscar Estupinan opening the scoring for the visitors in the contest before the Sky Blues' Matt Godden netted an equaliser in the second half.

The Tigers had to do without possession of the ball for large parts of the encounter in the West Midlands, but the defensive solidity Liam Rosenior has brought about in this Hull team meant they were able to keep a potent Coventry attack at bay.

The Yorkshire-based club are not in the hunt for the playoffs or embroiled in a scrap to avoid the drop as the campaign reaches its closing stages, and supporters may feel quite relieved after a start to the season that suggested relegation was a distinct possibility.

Wednesday's encounter with Burnley is a free hit for the hosts, and with a top-half finish still achievable, the Hull players will surely be relishing the challenge of facing an elite second-tier outfit on home soil.

Burnley continue to canter towards a place in the Premier League following a convincing 3-0 win over relegation-threatened Wigan Athletic on Saturday afternoon.

Like in the majority of their fixtures at fortress Turf Moor, the Clarets looked in complete control of the contest at all times, with a first-half red card for the Latics' Omar Rekik making the victory even more straightforward for Vincent Kompany's charges.

Southampton loanee Nathan Tella bagged a brace to take his second-tier tally to 14 for the season, while January signing Lyle Foster netted his first goal since making the switch from Belgian club Westerlo.

Burnley's invincibility continues at Turf Moor and their overall form is also extremely enviable, with Kompany's men currently on a 16-game unbeaten run in the Championship - it is safe to say Burnley have responded well after their relegation from the top flight last May.

The Clarets have almost certainly avoided a playoff trip to London this season but could still be making the journey to football's home in the FA Cup, although a quarter-final clash at Manchester City on Saturday is arguably the hardest Wembley entrance exam Burnley could have been given.

Team News

Oscar Estupinan celebrates scoring for Hull City on August 27, 2022© Reuters

Hull suffered a massive injury blow at the CBS Arena on Saturday, with striker Benjamin Tetteh suffering a hamstring injury - the Ghanaian is awaiting the results of a scan to determine the seriousness of the tear.

Cyrus Christie and Ryan Woods are expected back in training this week following their knee and groin injuries respectively, although Wednesday's visit of the league leaders is likely to come too soon for the pair.

The Tigers welcomed back Jean Michael Seri and Dimitrios Pelkas from injury in the draw at Coventry last time out, and both should retain their places in the starting XI at the MKM Stadium.

Burnley have reintroduced Jay Rodriguez and Manuel Benson into first-team training following their spells on the sidelines due to injury, but boss Kompany is being cautious with the duo's matchday involvement as they increase their fitness.

Josh Brownhill is expected back in action after the international break after his ankle injury, meaning a defensive-midfield pairing of Josh Cullen and Johann Berg Gudmundsson are likely to start again on Wednesday.

Hull City possible starting lineup:
Darlow; Coyle, Jones, McLoughlin, Elder; Simons, Seri, Tufan, Slater, Pelkas; Estupinan

Burnley possible starting lineup:
Muric; Roberts, Ekdal, Beyer, Maatsen; Gudmundsson, Cullen, Vitinho, Tella, Zaroury; Barnes

We say: Hull City 0-2 Burnley

Hull are looking to achieve a top-half finish in the Championship for the first time since the 2015-16 campaign, but face a Burnley side who are on a relentless unbeaten run.

The Clarets were able to cruise to victory against 10-man Wigan on Saturday, so Kompany's team should have plenty of energy to put in another commanding display at the MKM Stadium in this one.
