Liverpool striker Luis Suarez has issued an apology following his refusal to shake the hand of Manchester United defender Patrice Evra yesterday afternoon.

The Uruguayan had only just returned from an eight-match suspension for racially abusing Evra when their two clubs met at Anfield back in October.

Having reflected on his actions at Old Trafford, Suarez has now said sorry to his manager Kenny Dalglish and everybody connected with Liverpool.

"I have spoken with the manager since the game at Old Trafford and I realise I got things wrong," read a statement on the club's official website. "I've not only let him down, but also the club and what it stands for and I'm sorry. I made a mistake and I regret what happened.

"I should have shaken Patrice Evra's hand before the game and I want to apologise for my actions.

"I would like to put this whole issue behind me and concentrate on playing football."

Suarez scored in the match, which Liverpool lost 2-1.
