Manchester City reportedly identify RB Leipzig defender Josko Gvardiol as a replacement for Aymeric Laporte.

Manchester City are reportedly considering a summer move for RB Leipzig defender Josko Gvardiol.

The Citizens may be required to strengthen their backline this summer, with uncertainty surrounding the future of Aymeric Laporte.

Laporte, who has two years left to run on his Man City deal, has fallen down the pecking order at the Etihad Stadium this season.

The Spaniard has been restricted to nine Premier League starts this term, and as a result, he could depart this summer to gain regular playing time elsewhere.

With Laporte seemingly heading towards the exit door, Man City have begun their search for a possible replacement.

According to the Daily Mail, Gvardiol features among their list of targets as a potential replacement for Laporte.

The Croatia international was linked with a move to Chelsea last summer, before he signed a new contract with Leipzig until 2027.

With four years left to run on Gvardiol's contract, the Bundesliga club have set an asking price in excess of £85m.

There has been a suggestion in German media that Leipzig may be forced to sell key players this summer in a bid to meet Financial Fair Play rules, but the club's sporting director Max Eberl has played down those rumours.

Gvardiol, who is regarded as one of the best young defenders in Europe, has made 40 appearances for Leipzig this season.

The centre-back won the DFB-Pokal with Leipzig last season, and he will be aiming to help his side retain the trophy when they face Eintracht Frankfurt in next month's final.

Man City, meanwhile, will be in a buoyant mood after they secured their place in the Champions League final with a 4-0 semi-final second-leg victory over Real Madrid on Wednesday.

Pep Guardiola's side will have the chance to win the Premier League when they face Chelsea on Sunday as they look to claim the first trophy of a possible treble.
