Coronavirus: Manchester United 'face £22.5m Adidas bill if season cancelled'

Manchester United could reportedly be forced to sacrifice £22.5m of their sponsorship deal with Adidas if the 2019-20 season is cancelled due to a Champions League clause.

Manchester United could reportedly be forced to sacrifice £22.5m of their sponsorship deal with Adidas if the 2019-20 campaign is declared null and void.

Premier League clubs are holding an emergency meeting today to discuss the future of the current season, which has been put on hold due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Initial plans suggested that Premier League action could return on the first weekend of April, but it is widely accepted that the layoff could be significantly longer.

The priority for the football authorities and most clubs is understood to be to complete the season whenever possible - a prospect helped by the fact that Euro 2020 has been postponed until next summer.

The Evening Standard reports that United could lose out on £22.5m if the season is cancelled altogether due to a clause in their world-record £750m shirt sponsorship contract with Adidas.

The Red Devils will reportedly be forced to take a 30% cut if they miss out on Champions League qualification two years in a row, although the financial hit can be spread over the course of the deal.

However, the status of next season's European competitions remains shrouded in uncertainty, particularly with United's current league position of fifth being enough to qualify them for the Champions League if Manchester City's European ban is upheld.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side also have another potential avenue to earn Champions League football next season should the season resume, having all-but booked their place in the quarter-finals of the Europa League.
