Chris Smalling: 'Manchester United will bounce back'

Manchester United centre-back Chris Smalling warns Newcastle United to expect a backlash from the Red Devils when the pair meet at Old Trafford.

Manchester United centre-back Chris Smalling has warned Newcastle United to expect a backlash from the Red Devils when the pair meet at Old Trafford after the international break.

United suffered a disappointing 1-0 defeat at Chelsea on Sunday afternoon, with that result leaving Jose Mourinho's side eight points off Manchester City at the top of the Premier League table.

The 20-time English champions will look to bounce back from the result when they host Newcastle on November 18, and Smalling has warned the Magpies that United will be fired up to put on a strong performance.

"I think we'll have to regroup and make sure that - our next game is at Old Trafford - we put on a performance to rectify this," Smalling told reporters. "It is about us getting back to Old Trafford for that game and putting on a performance that the fans can be proud of."

United have won all five of their home Premier League games this season without conceding a single goal.
