Manchester United's Luke Shaw opens up on Jose Mourinho criticism

Manchester United defender Luke Shaw opens up on the "difficult" time he endured at the club while Jose Mourinho was in charge and openly criticising him.

Manchester United left-back Luke Shaw has opened up on the "difficult" time he endured at Old Trafford when Jose Mourinho was at the helm.

After overcoming several injury problems, the England international has blossomed in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's defence this term and regularly gets the nod over new arrival Alex Telles and Brandon Williams.

However, Mourinho openly criticised the former Southampton man when he was in the hotseat at Man United, but Shaw believes that the whole experience was a "learning curve" for him as he continues to flourish this season.

Speaking to BBC Sport, the 25-year-old said: "It was difficult because I wasn't able to get my word across. A lot of people were behind me here, so I knew I had that backing, but I just needed to keep my head down and keep quiet.

"People were saying negative things about me but I just look back at it as a learning curve and something that has improved me as a person off the pitch, not just on it.

"You always have some doubts. I have been very unfortunate to pick up the injuries I have had but I've always believed I can be an important player here.

"You want to be here and showing people what you can do. Hopefully I can keep doing that and proving people wrong."

Shaw has already turned out 26 times for Man United across all competitions this season and has five assists to his name.
