Former England international Chris Waddle has claimed that Manchester United need a "top-class" striker to partner Wayne Rooney.
Rooney, who scored 14 goals last season, has failed to find the net in three matches this term.
Waddle believes that the 29-year-old needs a player of proven quality up front with him to bring out his best form.
"United are lacking a presence, someone up front who can control the game and score goals," he told BBC Sport. "They need a poacher in the box.
"Rooney doesn't seem to have somebody he can play with and that is why they need to buy a top-class number nine for him to play behind."
United took a big step towards the Champions League group stage last night by beating Club Brugge 3-1 at Old Trafford in the first leg of their qualifying playoff.
