How Manchester United could line up with Timo Werner

Sports Mole looks at how Manchester United could line up next season if they sign RB Leipzig forward Timo Werner.

With Manchester United having spent much of the campaign outside of the top four in the Premier League table, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is known to want to strengthen his attack during the next transfer window.

While Borussia Dortmund winger Jadon Sancho appears to be the most likely arrival, it has been claimed that an approach could be made for RB Leipzig forward Timo Werner.

At a time when Liverpool are said to have cooled their interest in the Germany international, Old Trafford now appears to be a realistic destination for the 24-year-old.

With that in mind, Sports Mole takes a look at where the versatile striker could line up in United's starting lineup, taking into account other potential signings over the coming months.

Given his 30-goal return this season, there is an argument that Werner should be provided with an immediate opportunity down the middle of United's attack, leading to Marcus Rashford reverting to the flank.

However, despite the bulk of his appearances this season being as a central frontman, Werner may have to settle for being deployed down the left during the early weeks of the campaign.

Solskjaer will also have to take his use of Anthony Martial into consideration, with the Frenchman having only been used in the number nine role since the beginning of August.

Much could also depend on whether Solskjaer uses Bruno Fernandes as an outright number 10 or as part of a central-midfield three, which would see the Portuguese take on more defensive responsibility.

If Saul Niguez leaves Atletico Madrid for United, Fernandes may be provided with more licence to take on a free role, rather than feel that he needs to provide backup behind him.

Werner is also no stranger to being used in a 3-4-3 formation, and such a strategy may allow him to roam in the final third with cover in behind him at wing-back and a three-man defence.
